Ciara held a full splits position on the hotel room floor.

She had just completed a callisthenics workout consisting of pull-ups on the door frame, squats, press ups, bridging without the use of her hands, handstand presses and now a stretching routine. It had eased the boredom of the last twenty-four hours.

The previous day had been eventful.

The ambush of the Russian soldiers had caused everyone inside the hall to flee in panic. Connor had called her a few minutes after the firing had stopped and told her to bring their vehicle to the edge of the wooded area. She had complied, but when he nor Xander were there, she had begun to fear his capture. Just as she had chosen to get out of the vehicle and go look for him, he appeared with the Tatar.

When he said they managed to snatch one of the ambushers she had been shocked, before remembering something Bruce McQuillan had told her in his brief before she had ever met Connor— “He is the most audacious person I have known.”

The revelation of an American contractor had stunned her.

Their primary objective had been to escape the area. Then lay low and wait for Jaime and Xander’s contacts to gather intel to extract Gavril Ivanov. Laying low meant finding a place to stay where there were no cameras, and the staff were not the keenest eyed. They found such a place in the city of Simferopol, around two hours away from Sevastopol.

She had questioned the validity of choosing a city with known ties to the Crimean Tatars. The ambush had not made the media as yet, but now all the Russian security forces would be on high alert. She had worn a Niqab upon entering the hotel—her striking and unusual looks were a double-edged sword.

Connor had to take a room separate from hers as not to draw attention—an Islamic woman and a European non-Muslim would draw the eye. Instead, Xander had escorted her to her room but left as soon as she entered.

She ducked in for a cold shower. Ordinarily, when in a hotel, she would have taken a bath as per her training—the noise of the shower could mask an intruder’s entry. As there was not a bath, she made it as quick as feasible before drying and dressing in the same manner.

She checked her phone and saw Connor had sent a WhatsApp.
